You’re Tall but I’m Standing in Front of You

Our THIRD TIME’S A CHARM miniseries continues as friend of the pod Matt "Spooky" Powers joins us for our annual SPOOKtacular. This year, we watched Tommy Lee Wallace's Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982), aka "The One without Michael Myers." We discuss the film's obsession with the Irish, its failed attempt at totally reworking the Halloween series, and our answers to the eternal question, "What is this really a sequel to?"

Our THIRD TIME’S A CHARM miniseries continues with Ocean’s 13. We are joined by Sebastian Castillo (@bartlebytaco) to discuss the sort of charm you can only capture when everyone’s aggressively phoning in every aspect of a film, and how the Ocean’s series nefariously rehabilitates the grotesquerie of Las Vegas. Plus, we scrutinize Sebastian’s idiosyncratic appreciation of Ocean’s 12 and Men in Black 3.

Sebastian's most recent novel Fresh, Green Life is available from Soft Skull.

We're back with a new miniseries investigating the phenomenon of the threequel: it's THIRD TIME'S A CHARM. For this opening episode, we watched Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part III. We discussed this film's attempt to continue the film's attempt to revamp the series for a new decade, its use of the mafia to explore an increasingly globalized, neoliberal form of capitalism, and that sweet, sweet Pacino haircut.

It's a monumental day in American history, as we mark 5 years since our seminal, 5-part miniseries, "20 9/11s." We celebrated the anniversary by finally watching the movie we've talked about more on the podcast than any other we haven't actually seen: 2010's Remember Me. We discuss... well, you know what.Remember you? We never forgot.

Our SUMMER VACATION series reaches its thrilling conclusion with Christopher Nolan's take on the original summer vacation: The Odyssey (2026). We dive into this fine cheeseburger of a movie, discussing our favorite and least favorite segments, Tom Holland's accent, Nolan's impatient attempt to educate his own fanboys, and why you should stop worrying and love the convenient, non-IMAX screening near you.

We're veering south on SUMMER VACATION to discuss Mitt Romney's favorite movie, the Coen Brothers' O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000) with Mississippi-based musician Andrew Bryant, founding member of Water Liars. We discuss the film's reimagination of Homer's original vacation narrative, explore the relationship of politics, race, and cultural production, and Devin wonders why more parents aren't naming their kids James.

Our SUMMER VACATION heads east as we discuss Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away (2001) with returning guest General Slug, art director of Protean Magazine, noted weeb, and, of course, Devin's girlfriend.* We discuss the film's childlike view of a financially stagnate and spiritually polluted Japan, the relationship between identity, work, and leisure, No Face's speculative disruption of the bathhouse economy, and the film's ultimate fantasy: a boyfriend who is also a horse (and a dragon... and a wolf?).

Our SUMMER VACATION takes a detour into Middle Earth as we discussed Peter Jackson's interminable Hobbit trilogy: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014). Who knows what we talked about (it was a very traumatic episode), but Ethan's wife Catie joins us to discuss behind-the-scenes gossip and Ian McKellen's loose tongue.

Our SUMMER VACATION continues as we journey down to Paris, Texas (1984) with the help of Jourdain Searles. A man in a red cap making trouble in America based on his idyllic memories of the American past? What could be wrong with that? We discuss Wim Wenders' poetic exploration of identity, family, and failed romance and talk a lot about Six Flags for some reason.

It's finally time to kickoff our new miniseries: school's out, and the pod is going on SUMMER VACATION, in anticipation of Chris Nolan's adaptation of the original summer vacation this July. We watched the ur-text for all vacation movies, National Lampoon's Vacation (1983), a shaggydog odyssey into the heart of capitalism from Harold Ramis, John Hughes, and, of course, Chevy Chase. We came for the swimming pools and the roadside eats, but we stayed for the potent exploration of the boomer ideology: American is one big con job, and everyone's a mark, except for you (....right?).
